World of Magicka

Magicka is a little sleeper hit that came out about a week ago as it rocketed its way up to the top spot in steam sales. This game published by Paradox Interactive and developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. This game is very unique in how it is played and it does not take itself very seriously. You can expect orcs, goblins, warlocks, undead, and a vamp... well don't want to spoil anything.

The game play is very unique because of the way you do your casting. You have your eight elements and you mix them to create a spell and there are an amazing amount of combinations you can do. I still continue to come up with new ones and have my favorites, but I still enjoy switching it up. With these spells you can solve puzzles and battle enemies. It is very satisfying to see your enemies explode and doing damage to those around it. I have never played a game that is like this. It allows for up to four players to adventure together. This makes it a good time with a couple buddies just watch that arcane beam. You can also have your friends try out the arena mode where you fight wave after wave of enemies. Along with the amount of freedom it gives can make you feel like a fully fledged wizard just after finishing the first area. With new spells learned from books as you go through the game that are casted by a special combo of elements. You will soon memorize your favorites and there is nothing cooler then summoning your own meteor shower, just duck and cover. With the only problem being that you can't leave mid level or you have to start at the beginning next time you load up.

The storyline is outlined as you start the game about a wizard named Grimnir who wanted to expand the knowledge they have about magick. Other wizards got nervous and decided to bind him and keep him contained  hoping he would not hurt anyone. Soon though news travels that there is an attack being planned so you are sent off to go confront the king in Havindr and warn him. You start your travels in the wizards castle and you are being led by Vlad who claims he is not a vampire. The game is full of humorous dialog that mostly references some past meme. Still it is very hilarious to listen to the characters speak in some weird language that just sounds ridiculous.

This game is for someone who just wants to try something new and has an open mind and is willing to not take it to seriously. Honestly I would see this really appealing to anyone who just wants a little challenging game. Though it can take a little time and you can't really jump in and out of it due to the saving only at the end of the chapters. This game can get difficult at times, with there being several times where you are outnumbered and you are mashing keys to spam some high tier spells. It would not be very fun to someone who wants a very casual game because it can get difficult and might not want to come back to it. Along with the slight time commitment it can get annoying.

This game is a very good buy for only $9.99 on Steam. Also I am going to be hosting a giveaway for this game. There will be only one winner but all you need is a Steam account and a Windows machine to run the game. To enter you just need to be a follower of the blog, join the Facebook group, here is a link to it WASD and the other Controllers, and post below in the comment section with a spell idea you want to be in the game. I will draw a winner on the 15th of February so check back. I am having a blast with this game and am enjoying the freedom they give makes it a good time.

  1. I've always liked Acid. Acid is fun. Some sort of acid spell would be awesome. If not... something explosive.
