Dead Space 2

So this game was long in the making with Dead Space being released back in 2008. The developers Visceral Games have put a lot into this anticipated title and it was worth the wait. This game has not zombies but necromorphs, creatures that transformed from humans through an infection process. Feeling responsible for whats happening it is up to you, Isaac Clarke to destroy the newly created "Marker" and put an end to the chaos.

The game play is extremely reminiscent of the original with all the same monsters present with very few new ones added to the mix. They really stuck with what worked and it did not take away from the experience. With the main camera being 3rd person. With there being certain times where you are in a zero gravity area the mechanics for this are done extremely well. You can fly through the air and control Isaac very crisply and this was very impressive. However one thing that was noticeable would be the recycling of areas. It feels like your going in circles and for all I know you are, with little deviations through other sections of the space station. With all the dismemberment action still available it makes for a good time. With there being a good variety of weapons it makes it very fun along with a New Game + feature to start over with all your stuff from your previous completed game. Along with a hardcore mode unlocked after your first play through that makes death reload from your last save and you can only save three times so get out the red bull and power through.

Now the new multi player option they added is very unique, but with a lot of new people not knowing what to do can make it a little frustrating. It is simple 4v4 where there are the engineers vs the necromorphs. As you play games you get experience and get new unlocks. Playing as the necromorphs has a steep learning curve because everyone knows how to dismember you from the campaign but you have to rely on more surprises and gimmicks to get your kills. With very solid multi player experience it does give the game a great value.

Along to the story, it starts out with couple flashbacks and interrogation then fully opens up with you attached to a chair in a straight jacket. An unknown man comes and breaks you out but he is quickly disposed. You then get a call from a mystery woman telling you she has a cure for your dementia. Left with no choice you choose to take her advice to pursue her. Finding out that you were used to create a new "Marker" which is causing a new outbreak. Isaac finds his voice in the second installment and it really feels more involved with the story. With twists and turns this game really has the story that the first one did not. With the story lasting about six-eight hours it can be quite the trip. With all these necromorphs sneaking up on you and dropping down right on top of you does give you a very eerie sense of discomfort. You always need to be moving and the psychological aspect is still there. With there being new characters introduced as you go through the game this really does help develop Isaac more as a character.

This game is going to appeal to a good range of people. It is great to be played in chunks with there being save points almost everywhere it can be enjoyed by a very casual gamer. With the 3rd person over the shoulder view it does give a very different style but the aiming mechanics are very well done. So if you like survival horror games or if you were a fan of the the prequel this is a great game for you. Although this game would not be very enjoyable to someone who does not really like zombie games or just doesn't like the creepy atmosphere.

So in conclusion I do think this is a great game and it holds true to the sleeper hit of Dead Space. With Dead Space 2 coming and doing a great job telling the story and bringing back all the moments you enjoyed from the first one. You can pick it up at any local game store it is $59.99 out on multiple platforms. There is the PC/PS3/Xbox360 versions and though I played it on the PC it still had excellent controls as well as the story.
